South Baymouth Area: A Charming Lake Huron Town and Ferry Gateway to Manitoulin Island

South Baymouth is situated at the mouth of South Bay, where it joins Lake Huron. It is the departure point for the famous Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. The town is located only 65 km from Little Current at the northern tip of Manitoulin Island.

Originally called Sagradawawong or “The Outlet” due to its strategic location, South Baymouth became an important fishing village back in the 1880s. Some of the quaint original homes built for the fishermen still stand today. In 1932, the ferry service from Tobermory was established, allowing tourists and their cars access to Manitoulin Island.

MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry

The MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry is a must-see attraction in South Baymouth. This classic ferry was built in Collingwood, Ontario and launched in 1974. Her name means “big canoe” in Ojibwe. The Chi-Cheemaun makes multiple crossings per day between Tobermory and South Baymouth from May through October. The journey takes about 1 3/4 hours each way. South Baymouth Ferry Docks

The ferry docks feature a tourist information booth, public washrooms, and the ferry company offices. An addition completed in 1996 houses the town’s water treatment plant. Watch the ferry load, unload, and depart from the observation deck.
