South Baymouth is situated at the mouth of South Bay, where it joins Lake Huron. It is the departure point for the famous Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula. The town is located only 65 km from Little Current at the northern tip of Manitoulin Island.
Originally called Sagradawawong or “The Outlet” due to its strategic location, South Baymouth became an important fishing village back in the 1880s. Some of the quaint original homes built for the fishermen still stand today. In 1932, the ferry service from Tobermory was established, allowing tourists and their cars access to Manitoulin Island.
